Garden Extravaganza
June 21, 2023
-
Our garden series continues with visits to two different gardens featuring 25 acres of lush vegetation. Soos Creek Botanical Garden and Powellswood Garden located in Auburn and Federal Way are two garden oases in the urban environment. Docent led tours of each garden provide in-depth information about these extraordinary sites.
We begin at the Soos Creek Botanical Garden, a beautiful 22-acre garden that was purchased in the late 19th century. In the mid 1980's, tours of gardens in England and Japan inspired the owner to create stroll type gardens. A number of plants were purchased during these trips, such as tree peonies from Kyoto, Japan and Sorbus from England.
PowellsWood blends the untamed beauty of a Pacific Northwest forest and a curated, English-style garden in one dynamic visit. The tour will explore seven distinctive garden areas with more than 1,000 species of plants packed into three acres.
We’ll stop for a hearty Italian lunch between the garden visits, so you will have a chance to rest, and maybe enjoy a glass of wine with your newfound garden enthusiast friends!

Seattle Beneath the Streets
July 19, 2023
-
The story behind the Seattle underground streets centers around the fire of 1889 which devastated the city. When it came to rebuilding, the town-planners decided to take this opportunity to raise the street level of the entire area to avoid the perennial problem of flooding.
On this guided tour, you will get to know Seattle’s first established neighborhood, Pioneer Square, by walking its underground pathways as they existed in the 1890s in the company of a guide. Trace the city’s history, from an Indigenous dwelling, to its Gold Rush days, and up through its current state as a thriving modern neighborhood on this walking tour.
The terrain is uneven, and participants must be able to climb a flight of stairs. After the tour we will have a marvelous lunch at Luigi’s Italian Eatery.

Step Into Nature #4: 'Round the Peninsula
August 8, 2023
-
August 10, 2023
This three day, two night Step Into Nature tour features several opportunities for light hiking as we journey around the beautiful Olympic Peninsula.
We start with breakfast in Sequim and leisurely hike through Railroad Bridge Park at the Dungeness River Nature Center. The 1.2 mile round trip (RT) walk follows the historic rail line along the river.
Continuing along the northern side of the peninsula, we’ll spend the bulk of the afternoon at the Sol Duc River area where you can hike with your guide to the falls (1.6 miles RT), bring your swimwear and enjoy a soak in the hot pools ($18 admission not included) or do a little of both. Later we will check in at the Pacific Inn in Forks for a two night stay. After a brief respite, we’ll have dinner together on the way to LaPush to watch the sunset over the Pacific at one of the most beautiful beaches in Washington.
Next morning after breakfast on your own, the Neah Bay adventure begins. We’ll spend the day visiting the Makah Museum, having a picnic lunch and hiking the incredible Cape Flattery trail. The furthest northwest tip of the contiguous United State, Cape Flattery provides a dramatic backdrop to a surprisingly accessible hike of 1.5 mile RT. It is usually windy out there, but the gravel trail is well maintained and boardwalks have been installed to traverse the boggy sections.
Thursday morning we check out early and start down the coast. Breakfast at the iconic Kalaloch lodge will be first on the agenda. Then we work our way south stopping to spend some time on one of the gorgeous beaches along 101. Bring a book and a snack or put on your wading shoes, we’ll take some time to soak it all in before turning for home.
