Come Hear Janice and her wild and wooly tales of learning to speak the language of wool, and the resulting art and adventures along the way.
For over 40 years Janice Arnold has been creating textile art, immersive installations and community participatory events centered around her handmade textiles out of her studio located in and around the historic Grand Mound School.Her artwork stems from her passion and respect for ancient textile traditions. She has traveled the globe to learn ancient textile processes from indigenous artisans. Her explorations and inventions of new techniques and approaches, have redefined the medium of handmade Felt in art, theatrical, architectural, environmental and community-based arenas.Janice exhibits and lectures nationally and internationally about indigenous felt-making and how it informs her work, which is in the permanent collection of the Cooper- Hewitt Nat’l Design Museum, and public and private collections worldwide. She has received numerous grants, awards.Last Fall she went to Kazakhstan, sponsored by the Smithsonian, US Embassy, Chevron, and the Union of Artists Kazakhstan, to give presentations, teach master classes and create an installation of her textile art. This summer her work was featured in the Smithsonian Magazine.
